Tasted at Covela's historic estate—a Renaissance manor that sits frozen in time, poised at the mouth of the Douro Valley, along a southern-facing amphitheater robed in lush greenery. The 2013 Escolha Branco is a blend of Avesso and Chardonnay, with a few years of age, offers perfumy aromas of dried honey and orange blossom. Barrel fermentation lends texture, refinement and creaminess. This is a balanced, poetic wine, bright and fresh with delicate mineral filaments wending in and out of stone fruit. Hazy look of grapefruit with a few grenadine drops, and thick white crown that sits the throne like foam. Ladybug lacing. Sweet grapefruit, tangerine and lemon marmalade smells laced in leek, and green onion filaments; a healthy navel orange and persimmon. Buttered rum creaminess, turns pale with pith of grapefruit and Meyer lemon, then twists in a hint of pepper, lime peel and nutmeg pudding. The central theme is creamy orange, but porcupines with darts of intense citrus. Citrusy, spritely, aromatic orange loveliness. Orange blossom, mandarin oranges, wet stones. On the palate, Aphros Loureiro 2014 is equally enchanting, softly-textured with delicate silvery mineral filaments weaving in and out of kumquat-and-lemon-pith acidity. Crystalline, with briny sea air and smoke gliding atop earth-bound aromas of granulated honey, orange zest, and bruised pear. Le Brun Servenay Exhilarante Brut Millesimé 2004 is understated, nuanced and impressively rich. Delicate mousse forms sparkling filaments through dense, golden-hued and sappy layers of orchard fruit and brioche.
