Ollauri Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 1970

It took me 10 minutes to remove the cork but I was able to extract it largely intact…and it was gnarly. Completely saturated. In fact, it oozed the moment I pierced the cork with the worm. A producer I have no previous experience so no context. The color is garnet/orange with all the sediment and opaque as a result. So much earth, mushrooms, teriyaki, toasted coconut, wood, nuts and leather but there is fruit there too! Desiccated red and dark fruits; deep and dark. There’s tannin, still but it all integrated. The acid is a gorgeous girdle. The finish is long, mature and complex. Drink now? But considering it’s lived this long, it will probably continue to last. For how long? Who knows. A lovely surprise.

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Solid on Day 1 with some VA that blew off and this was rocking by Day 2. The 2010 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with very light staining of the tears. No signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing, with heady notes of Morello cherry, blackberry, black plum, bergamot, tomato leaf, red flowers, coffee, dried green herbs, and soft baking spices. On the palate the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Alcohol is high but in balance. Certainly a Brunello of fine character. Distinctive and yet totally true to its sense of place. There’s a near palpable density. Modern but sexy. Drink now with patience and through 2035+. — 3 months ago

Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2021

This robust Sangiovese is a nearly-perfect food wine. It’s big and fruity, smooth bodied and easy drinking. Predominant flavors are bright cherries and pepper. We enjoyed it with hand-cut pappardelle with Calabrian chile-tomato sauce & kale. — 10 months ago

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2013

Light bodied yet highly tannic Rioja. Personally, I expect Rioja to be at least medium bodied but very drinkable. — 2 years ago
