Les Genevrières Meursault 1er Cru Chardonnay 2006

2022/7/9-10 with chicken with white wine and tarragon, Kenji Lopez-Alt’s roasted potatoes, etc. This was an interesting bottle; as Jasper Morris notes, there’s a bit of intentional CO2 spritz present even after all these years. On day 1, that added a bit of an edge to things, but at the core there is a lovely nose of spiced (mace, vanilla) cookies, buttery caramel and various fruit tarts. The palate really did better on day 2, which revealed a more relaxed, integrated, spherical whole. Overall, the nose was the star - but considering that this improved after opening, I’d love to see how it is with even more time. — 2 years ago

Reserva Viña Ardanza Rioja Tempranillo Garnacha 2009

2020 fall. This might be my favorite (at least for immediate enjoyment) among the wines guzzled on our recent Rioja binge. It’s open-knot, with lots of red fruit and spices like mace, but also has typical mature notes - that mushroom and cheese thing. At the same time, it doesn’t feel overly developed - it’s just layered. — 4 years ago

barnyard funk quickly blew off revealing menthol, mulled berries, carob and suede

a core of crunchy berry fruit was piercing ~ cherry lozenges and liqueur, cassis, cranberry, raspberry candy ~ JUICY ~ some star anise and mace on the finish

Beetroot, red currant, cotton candy, menthol, black cherries, pork fat on the nose. Full body with high alcohol but offsetting freshness and acidity that lingers. Almost seems like it went thru a semi carbonic mace ration. — 3 years ago

Beautiful golden color. Nose of (well toasted) brioche slathered in honey butter. Star fruit and mace. Pear tart with vanilla custard and almond crust. Bead fell off rather quickly. — 3 years ago
