Le Dôme Saint-Emilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2008

Shay A

Today was my annual hosting of the Wednesday Wine Committee. There was 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert, all provided by me. Tasted blind, as always.

Wine number four in a flight of four Cabernet francs. Bordeaux is all over this (as it should be) with the more delicate and savory herbal notes next to some leather and pepper spice. This is probably beginning it’s prime drinking window (where I’m sure it will remain for a good while). Showed a lot of complexity. Most guessed left bank cab blend. Not very tannic, solid acidity. Old plum, black cherry core and dusty graham cracker highlight the aromatics. There is a mix of red and black licorice on the palate next to bay leaf and cocoa dusted dates which works really well.

@David T : I had the ‘10 a year ago and it was just spectacular. I wish I had one to try in a few more years.

@Mark Flesher : This was tasting really solid today. It was one of the bottles we bought from JJB. Saw your note from opening one of these a few months ago and I figured I’d roll the dice. Wish I had another!

@Shay A @David T the 08 is good but “average”. 2009 is a real step up and till now they maintain that high level year after year (11 and 13 are less)

Echantillon St. Émilion Grand Cru 2015

The first nose is very fruity: plum and blackberry. And then: the smell of leather and mushrooms hits the nostrils. And it is quite spectacular. The finish is rather short but the tannins are mild and pleasant. — 2 months ago

Not the most complex saint emilion I've tasted, but thoroughly enjoyable — 2 years ago

World's End

Reserve Against The Wind Cabernet Franc 2013

World's End is the Napa project of Jonathan Maltus. He's better known for his work on the Right Bank of Bordeaux as the owner of Château Teyssier and creating Le Dôme. The 2013 Against The Wind was sufficiently beaten up by more than one critic, but I was still surprised when I fished it out of a discount bin for $9... he's made a wine that Robert Parker scored 100... I think I'll take the risk... Juicy plum with blueberry are the focus, followed by some Hershey's cocoa powder and roasted red pepper, with some tertiary molasses and dried violet. — 2 years ago

Underrated. Cherry compote with eucalyptus, cedar, and leather flavors. Medium-to-full bodied with a long finish and firm tannins. — 3 months ago

Pity about the nose, it’s quite corked but this has not affected the wine, wonderful fruit, great balance between tannin and acid, lovely structure. — 2 years ago
