Château Climens

Barsac 1er Cru Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 1986

1986 vintage. From 375 ml's. Double decanted and tasted across five separate bottles over the course of 5 hours. Consistently excellent. Oodles of peach and tangerine along with the usual, age appropriate, honeyed/dried fruits flavors. Showing really nicely and should so for the foreseeable future. 3.14.24. — a month ago

Heck of a 3rd Friday to kick off the holidays!

This was my first time with this producer. All the typical Sauternes notes of honeyed fruits, marmalade, toasted cashews...the sweetness wasn’t as precise as Rieussec, Climens or Guiraid up front, but it had the aromatics and front, mid palate in spades. Drinking well now but clearly no rush.

Alexander Vineyards has a great selection of wines, all at great values. This is their only dessert wine, and it has been delicious every time I’ve had it.

Last bottle of mine. This is from the Barsac region. Richly colored gold in the glass. Viscous, but not overly so. If comparing to a Climens, I’d say this doesn’t have as much of the orange-honey roasted cashew type note, but lots of orange marmalade, honeyed tropical fruits and honeysuckle. This showed a more powerful core than a 2009 LaTour Blanche I had a few weeks ago (which I enjoyed how bright it was). Paired with truffle salted popcorn at the end of the night, and it was great.

@Joshua Fisher : correct. Their tasting room is actually in the hill country (near Austin & San Antonio, TX), but none of their wine is from Texas. They work with producers (champagne, Bordeaux, Germany, Spain, etc) and then import their wines under their AV label.

Nice color and aromatics of caramel and toffee. 39 years and shows a mix of age and soft maturity. Best with a light fruit based dessert like lemon or lime based cake perhaps. Fun to share at Bourbon Steak @ Levi Stadium. — 5 years ago

Drank 4/26/18 at a tasting event.

2nd wine of Climens. Nose of pineapple and honeyed apricots, with some slight volatility that blows off after a few minutes. Flavors of pineapple and some light honey, without the depth or richness of the Climens. Decent wine, but would vastly prefer the Doisy Vedrines for around the same price.
