Caballo Loco Number Fifteen Red Blend

A wine we brought back from a wine bistro called Boconariz in Santiago a couple of years ago, this is absolutely terrific. Beautiful, intense red-purple color, the tannins are sweet and rich with a great hint of camphor on the nose. Well-integrated tannins with a rich mouthfeel, that camphor component is a bit more amplified on the palate, but not overwhelming by any means. Lingering, balanced finish. Hard to gauge how much longer this will continue to develop, but my guess is that’s it’s peaking right now. Terrific example of a carmenere! — 5 years ago

Denner Vineyards

The Sacred Burro Willow Creek District Carignan 2018

First time having this one, I’d buy it again.
Vinous 94

Winemaker Anthony Yount produced a stellar set of wines in 2018, all of which exhibit the vibrant fruit character that marks the vintage. Once again, I was impressed by the all-Carignan Sacred Burro bottling, which shows the potential of this still-obscure variety in Paso Robles, both as a blending grape and for a stand-alone varietal bottling. While more and more wineries have begun to include it in their plantings and the resulting wines, nobody yet is doing it as consistently well as Denner.

Valdivieso

Caballo Loco Number Nine Red Blend

Valdivieso of Chile, central valley, Caballo Loco #8. 14% alc. This blend is unknown as the grapes are not mentioned on the bottle. The color is ruby red with a tint of brown like we see in most French wines. The bouquet is like an Italian Sangiovese with hints of blueberry pie and dandelions. The palate is characteristic of dark cherry and blueberry and a hint of dark currant. There is a slight hint of oak and moss. No spice, no other real flavors that I can detect. A very simple wine. The finish is quick and mildly dry. Not my favorite, but not bad for a South American wine. — 6 years ago

Caballo Loco Number Sixteen Red Blend

Plum, blackberry, bark, spice, and chalkboard aromas and flavors for this Bordeaux blend. Smooth tannins, medium acidity, decent finish! Had it after polo for a barbecue with friends, which was perfect! — 5 years ago

Puglia Sangiovese Negroamaro 2016

A big Sangiovese with some punch to it, this is a great general purpose food wine. Predominant flavors are cherry and dark plum, with some acidity to the finish. It is fuller bodied than the average Sangiovese, pairing nicely adobo loco steak with poblano, corn, and crispy potato hash. Bellissimo! — 7 years ago
