Bourbon Cask Matured Peat Smoke Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

2023 Whisky Advent Calendar, Day 9: this is actually the Benromach Contrasts: Peat Smoke small batch in Bourbon casks. To me the nose is all smoke, not much else. But the first taste on sipping is intense tropical fruits and ginger. But then the peat comes back in the finish, though not as intense as on the nose. It’s good, at first not my thing but it grows on you. — 4 months ago

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Kiwi fruit and pineapple, this whiskey isn't totally dry but its fruit is matched by a tangy acidity. A touch of peat smoke, oak, and burned sugar rounds things out. — 8 years ago

Aged 40 Years Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2022 Release

WhiskeyFest SF 2022 - (reused glass so not doing tasting notes) a bit stronger than the 1979. Preferred that to this. — a year ago

I see some 30 & 35 still available, how do they compare to Glenfarclas?

Sherry Cask Matured Peat Smoke Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I don't particularly care for peated whisky, but this bottle was nothing short of brilliant. The finesse was absolutely mind-boggling - not something I had expected out of a dram made with high levels of peat smoke, at 67 ppm.

Again, I'm not very good with whiskies and it's not often I write notes on it, but this just demanded the attention. Perhaps the best peated whisky I've had.

Tasted neat. Very elegant smoke, if that even makes sense. Neither harsh, nor overpowering. There's a citrusy, spice box, and sea-spray element to the nose too. Palate feels quite rich, kinda like smoking a cigar and eating creme caramel with candied pineapples. The finish is smooth, long, spicy, and smoky. With ice/water, I got more of the oak, but the more delicate citrusy elements started appearing on the palate. The smoke also feels more savoury than cigar-like, kinda like that smokiness in smoked foods. A real joy to sip on.

NB: Distilled 2006, bottled 2016. Another user's tasting note sums this up very well - strong peat, light scotch 🤣
