Livre Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León Mencia 2012

Very nice Mencia wine, big and bold but with enough elegance so it doesn’t go over the top — 17 days ago

Pintia Toro Tempranillo 2013

Deep ruby with opaque center and a dull platinum rim, medium viscosity. On the nose, it has frank and expressive blackberry, cassis and ripe cherry aromas followed by gentle spice and oak overtones. This just smells elegant. On the palate, it turns into a delight with a plushy broad mouthfeel and firm yet silky tannins. Confirmed the aromas and got vanilla and spices in the long and floral finish. Dry wine, medium acidity, medium tannins, medium plus body and medium plus alcohol. Very well integrated with a noticeable structure. Decanted for 3 hours. Probably will be hard to guess Tempranillo in a blind tasting...first time trying a Vega Sicilia wine and I can see why their wines are so sought after! A treat any day really, but even better on a smoky Seattle day. — 8 days ago

Tomás Esteban Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2005

Today 15 years ago our lives completely changed! Congrats L! The wine is simply spectacular! Great nose with lots of red fruit. Tanins nicely integrated and subtle acidity. It was worth the wait! — 12 days ago

Ultreia Bierzo Mencia 2018

Heady nose of blackberries, jammy purple fruit, brambly and peppery aromas, and then surprisingly lifted on the palate. Sappy with a uniquely Spanish garrigue quality. Refined in its structure and reminiscent of cru Beaujolais in the realm of brouilly or moulin a vent but at 15 years ago prices. Such a generous wine! Plenty of freshness, spice and raw pleasure to spare. — 8 days ago

@Mike R increasingly rare for a sub-$20 wine to deliver so much on so many fronts... aroma, structure, complexity, and pure enjoyment.

Bodegas Emilio Moro

Ribera del Duero Tinto Fino 2005

Still drinking well at 15 years old.. obviously showing more secondary and tertiary flavors with subdued dark berry flavors, grilled meat juice, slight incense/smoke, raisin.. slightly astringent, preserved acidity .. good stuff! — 7 days ago

P.S. (Pagos Seleccionados) Ribera del Duero Tinto Fino 2017

Modern take on Ribera del Duero from select vineyards. The color is deep purple, indicative of the 60+ year old vine grape selection. An expressive nose with scents of black fruits, tobacco and leather. The mouthfeel is equally expressive with cherry, blackberry, oak, vanilla, and licorice. The tannings are soft for such a young Tempranillo, and it is not slander but quite the contrary, it allows for the elegant finish with finesse and length. Very exiting wine!

PS The mastermind/winemaker behind Aalto made his mark at Vega Sicilia for over 30 years. It is no surprise the wine is excellent; it will be exciting to see how the wine evolves over the next decade and how it will challenge some of the greatest wines produced in the region.

Nieva York Castilla y León Pét-Nat Verdejo

The aroma brings red apple and melon to mind. There’s a faint hint of citrus in the initial bouquet, followed by biscuit. The finish is mildly toasty. Overall, an excellent Pét-Nat Verdejo. — 7 days ago

Roble Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2018

Black pepper, an irony thing, fresh blackberries, a touch of vanilla. This is very good. The palate is well crafted : there is a great acid drive and there is matter on the side, a nice thickness and some grip, a beautiful blackberry fruit all along, some tannins kick things up in the middle. Theid palate is spherical and there is sweetness to it but then the finish starts and it's very dry, and a bit of salt and bitterness pop up in the rear. That's a great young tempranillo. I'd say one of the best I've had recently! — 13 days ago

Viña San Román Toro Tempranillo 2010

Nose of mushroom and compost, leather, tar, vanilla and blackberry pie. Spicy on the tongue, with almost bitter cherry and blueberry skin. Dark chocolate and mocha strike on the mid palate with minerality to finish. Plush yet elegant. Drank side by side with ‘09 - prefer the ‘10. Alcohol stays in balance on this vintage, subtle oak notes show to finish. Drink now with a splash decant. — 7 days ago
