Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

After a coffee chat at work yesterday that ended discussing Hillside Select I was motivated to open one for the holiday weekend. Initially I was very disappointed as the wine was flat and uninspiring considering the pedigree and price tag. Read some reviews that this 2013 needs A LOT of air and sure enough after hours the wine began to evolve and markedly improve. It is an intense wine that lingers in the mouth for a long time. Smooth tannins, red fruit and tobacco flavors. Not my most favorite wine and not at the $229 I paid, but nonetheless a very good wine once it had the chance to get some air for a few hours — 2 years ago

Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Ok this is one of those thick bottles that got ripped in my wine cellar so it is the petite Sirah (read durif )(a natural cross of Peloursin X Syrah - I believe Francois Durif is the one that discovered and observed it - any way big tannins subtle spice black fruits earth - for me a nicely made wine just not super interesting — 3 years ago

Fay Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Nose of vanilla and blackberry. Drying on the pallet. Still has time in the bottle, even though I read it was past due. Really tasty, especially with the pork chop my friend cooked up. Yum! — 8 years ago

Nice

Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

I was able to have a good conversation with Justin (one of the wine guys) at Central Market as he poured me the rest of the Silver Oak, and he was gracious enough to open up the floor for recommendations on what their next higher-end wine should be to serve BTG at cost. In the meantime, however, he opened up this bad boy and man...what a treat. The winemakers for Nice are (from what I’ve heard and read) some pretty solid dudes and it was neat to see that they’re headquartered right here in Houston. Below is an excerpt taken directly from their site as a means of education to satisfy all of the wine nerds out there (myself included):

“Winemaker and Foodie superduo Ryan Levy and Ian Eastveld of Nice Winery are Certified Sommeliers, wine educators, and Le Cordon Bleu trained chefs. Their hand crafted, boutique wines are poured in top restaurants and have won gold medals in internationally recognized wine competitions. Ryan and Ian have built their epicurean pedigree while studying in Paris, France, directing culinary education for Viking, teaching cuisine to thousands of students at Central Market, and operating their restaurant and catering companies, Republic and Nuance. They make their wines from estate vineyards in Texas, Argentina, and California.”
