Deep gold color. Motor oil weight in the glass. Happy to find the nose has some interesting notes and doesn’t signal the wine is too advanced. Candied apricot. Kiwi fruit, apple slices, pebble stones, sweet lemon. Good structure. Great finish. Maybe just a hint oxidized but overall a great old white burg experience. — 19 days ago

Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir 2018

Two Sonoma Coast pinots in a row. Similar fruit profile of concentrated red fruit, but the Rivers Marie has a bit more acidity (could be age as this was much younger) which keeps the wine focused and engaging. Fist RM pinot and a big fan already! — 3 months ago

This is good. I’ve had an unfortunate run with Beaujolais recently, four bottles in a row that were either muddled and overripe or overwhelmed with goût de souris. Needed to open this to remind myself.

Pink and purple flowers, black licorice, delicate pepper atop bright purple fruit. Very pure if a little ripe, the acid melds well into the spicy and subtly structured palate.

@Peter Sultan Seriously, nothing that I’ve tried is in quite the same league, save the Couderts which are very different. Frustratingly, a lot of “top” bottling I’ve tried recently have underwhelmed with a pattern of unappealingly ripe fruit combined with a spate of microbial faults. Generally I’m in favor of low intervention wines but every time I spend $30-$40 on an overly hyped, clumsily-made gamay that tastes of beef broth it makes me want to write the whole region off.

How alarming- I’m so used to Beaujo as such a consistent terroir across a broad band of producers. Have you tried any Paul Brun (Terres Dore); Nicole Chanrion; Domaine Vissoux(Chermette); Yardy; or Roillette? I’d be really curious if different importers for your trio of bad Beaujo. I would imagine too the importer (s) would be grateful to know about the wines...@Josh Morgenthau

@Peter Sultan Bojo was one of the regions that made me fall in love with wine initially (the other being the Loire). I’ve enjoyed countless bottles of brun, breton, lardy, thivin. The disappointments were from dutraive, balagny, chamonard, and cotton, all hyped producers that happened to be the last four I’ve tried. I’ve yet to attempt to identify a pattern among importers. Could just be bad luck, or my palate’s changing. Or low/no sulfur + climate change leading to wines that aren’t stable through the supply chain. It will remain a mystery for now.
