It's time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday.
Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim and medium intensity.
Nice nose with red fruits, light oak, spices, chocolates, licorice and peppercorn.
Medium bodied with medium acidity.
Dry on the palate with red currants, cherries, raspberries, earth, black coffee, bitter vegetables, light oak, spices, dark chocolates and peppercorn.
Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and cranberries.
This Australian Merlot is drinking nicely now. Earthier than I expected it to be. Feels like a blend of new and old world.
Showing a soft and plush mouthfeel, and a bit bitter once it opens up.
Easy drinking and better after a couple of hours of airtime. Changes every 30 minutes in the decanter. Interesting.
I had a few different vintages years ago, and it is a completely different wine today.
Aged in American oak barrels. Vegan.
15.5% alcohol by volume.
89 points.

Very dark in colour - almost black. Lots of everything - ripeness, oak, blackberry, dark chocolate. The sort of wine I would have loved in my 20’s, not so much in my 70’s. Not for lovers of delicate wine - this is full throttle. This Australian producer is probably better known in the USA than Australia - like Mollydooker. A full bodied palate with M plus intensity and grainy tannins. Ranked No. 3 in Wine Spectators Top 100 wines of 2012. Not sure that extended cellaring will make a huge difference but will try to have the last one in early 2027. — 7 months ago
Surprisingly pleasant and fun. Had it twice and drank it down both times. Cooled it a bit first. — 2 years ago
Deep ruby, heavy bodied - nose opens up to strawberry, spice and bubblegum. Mouth feel: blackcurrant, black pepper, liquorice, vanilla. medium acidity, well integrated tannins… very smooth to drink! — 2 months ago
This was a lucky acquisition in 2008. Two states, five cities and seven homes later, survived. I'm so happy and relieved that it kept as well as it did! A truly amazing wine that lives up to its reputation! Sublime Velvet. — 6 months ago
Winner of the night from the Legend Imports wine dinner at Peasant featuring a variety of beautiful wines from Australia that are not mollydooker penfolds or yellowtail.
This wine was described as Australian Montrachet and boy was that right. Anyone tasting blind would’ve picked burgundy.
Delicious. — 2 years ago
Sipping Fine Wine
Deep, dark Ruby with a big fruity nose and lots of ripe berries with oaky notes. Jammy big and bold blackberry flavors with some spice, cacao, cedar and leather notes with nice mouthfeel. Big fine tannins with berry fruit carried over to the finish with oak and sweet spice. Nice! — 2 days ago
