Carneros Pinot Noir 2017

v17. Very good! Enticing, wafting smoke nose. Juicy, rich, black cherry fruit. Smooth, bright, pleasantly tart, long mineral finish. Enjoyable! — 5 months ago

Napa Valley Merlot 2006

We lost a bit of the cork but poured into a decanter which caught it. Everyone home for Christmas this was a bottle that I bought in Napa while at my niece’s wedding before getting moved to Shanghai. We we’re drinking a recent vintage when I realized I probably had an older vintage in the basement. Was a great comparison and didn’t last long great quality and still a great wine. — 6 months ago

Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

From magnum. A cut above the 17’ Napa bottling.
Richer and darker fruits with peppery spices, counter by bright acidity. More depth on the mid palate. Balanced and complex.
15% PV from Kendrick vineyard.

Saint Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Ming L
9.4

The last of the 3 magnums, this one is the 2016 cab, also from the estate vineyard in Saint Helena.

It’s markedly more powerful than the ‘15. Deep and complex, the aromas and flavors are a revolving door of blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, cedar, dark chocolate, black pepper, thyme, and hint of mineral (iron?). Beautiful acidity and firm elegant tannins. Not as integrated as the ‘15 tonight, but this should age better.

Oakville Grade Red Wine 2015

Ming L
9.2

An oddly-named bottling. “Oakville Grade”? I suppose majority of the juicy from Oakville, but I could not find much information on this 15’ blend.
Gentle nose of red cherry, blueberry, black currant, creme de cassis, fresh herbs, and vanilla. The medium to full body feels weightless at times. Full of fresh sweet (a bit too sweet for me) cherries flavor. Silky, plush, almost feminine. Finely grained sweet tannins.
From magnum. This is still very primary, and will have a long life ahead.

Napa Valley Cabernet Franc 2016

9.2

3 magnums from Merryvale. Such a treat.

First up is the 2016 CF Napa Valley. This is a powerful CF compared to the 2015 I drank not long ago, displaying a lot more dark fruits and creme de cassis. Rich, deep, and balanced. Not as charismatic as the ‘15 in terms of displaying varietal characters. Immensely enjoyable still.

Don Melchor Puente Alto Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Fun to compare this famed Chilean cab, also from 13’ in magnum, to the Merryvale cabs.
A bit more savory and herbal, with hint of green bell pepper that’s signature of Chilean cab. Ripe dark fruits intertwined with tart fresh cherry fruits made for a supple yet vibrant palate. Quite elegant.
I was not very impressed with couple of the older vintages I tasted. But this is great!
