Feb 2023. At 5 - 6 years, light gold color. With decant, shows depth and beautiful complexity. Ultra smooth, with brioche, lime leaf. Can last to 2025. — 10 months ago

Cornerstone Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2018

Johan Reyneke’s Cornerstone blend is a match for many a decent Bordeaux, and in the 2018 vintage is particularly good. Replete with classical aromas of cassis, pencil shavings and cedar, the palate follows with great elegance, structure and a chalky, long finish. If anything, I’d prefer a little more savoury character as this tends towards sweetness (but not over-extraction), but it’s young right now! It’s extraordinary how inexpensive this wine is - it would knock the socks of some Bordeaux Crus Classés in a blind tasting. — 2 months ago

No. 6 Dijon Free Johan Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

Just a tad shy of the 2017, I’m still enthusiastic about this vintage. Similar color and a familiar capgun and flint scent that eventually morphs into popcorn (no butter) and settles into yellow pears and lemon.

Spicy and deep with complexity, it’s only one point off from 2017 and that’s because it’s a bit rounder. Still, it has nicely balanced acidity. Generous finish. One of my favorite North American chardonnays ever.
