Cornas, Northern Rhône

Domaine Alain Voge

Les Vieilles Vignes Cornas Syrah 2014

From a bottle that had been opened the day before with half the contents remaining so these notes are from Day 2. The wine pours a deep purple with a ruby rim and a near opaque core. Medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing and already brimming with confidence. Bright blue bramble fruits, lavender, black pepper, olive tapenade, some well oiled leather and some baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The body and supple texture is distinctive. The finish is long and satisfying. From a Cornas perspective, this is less wild and more polished but that’s not a slight. This is a beautifully made Cornas from one of my favorite vintages in the Rhône over the last 15 years. — a month ago

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 2016

Too young I know but was hoping with a 5h+ decant this would still deliver. It did, though I’m not sure it showed as distinctively as I was hoping. On cork pop a medicinal note that blew off. Lots of dark red fruit and purple flowers. Tannins are there but alongside a ribeye weren’t overbearing. Quite nice but was hoping for something more. — 15 days ago

Objectively delicious. Gentle frame of fruit and acid with little tannin to get in the way. Wow. — a month ago

I love 21. Utterly classic but young nose of red berries, granite and a youthful grapiness. Some florals as well but a bit of a monolith aromatically out of the gates. More notes later as it opens up on the nose. Palate is so elegant my goodness and has that youthful grapiness. Huge red and darker berry fruit, perfect balance, clarity and purity. So juicy and clean but young but obviously very high quality. More notes as it evolves. Nose now closed at 3 hours but palate has gained finesse and it’s ultra juicy and pure. Finish is clipped but this is the whole package. This has a semi opulent midpalate one can get lost in. Wow. Incredible decadent Pomerol (lafleur?) fruit. Just insane. So elegant. This is the best Burgaud ever. — 4 days ago

Domaine Auguste Clape

Cornas Syrah 1990

Slight leak and thus mid-shoulder fill, purchased on release at KLWM, smells and tastes like classic Cornas, bacon/wild animal notes, pure redfruits, soft tannins, lovely acidity, I have to admit being a Verset >> Clape guy generally, but this is lovely, long finish!! — a month ago

"Le Pavillon" Ermitage Syrah 2020

Phenomenal! Dark plum base but layers of exhiberant and concentrated small dark berries and red fruit jump from the glass, but all enveloped in deep, complex earthy tones. Palate is insane, minerality and acidity are tingling, almost sparking on the sides of the mouth, mingling with the very fine lively tannins. So much pleasure without sacrificing any seriousness — 11 days ago
