Château La Dominique

Château La Dominique

Grand Cru Classé St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Mid to dark Crimson. Initially not giving much on the nose after decanting. After some time and a lot of swirling in the glass, aromas of black currant and McBaren’s Plum Cake pipe tobacco which I used to smoke at college many decades ago. Unusually for La Dominque this is 100% Merlot with zero Cabernet Franc. Palate is still lively and fresh with a long future ahead. Supple and persistent. La Dominique is surrounded by high profile neighbours with the best parcels bordered by Cheval Blanc. Other neighbours include Figeac, Conseillante and L’Evangile. Will leave the next for 2 or 3 years. — 4 days ago

Lovely domaine, I like your description (MCBaren’s Plum Cake pipe tobacco 🙃 we both stopped smoking, I guess... but still miss this)

Tried a few styles of pipe tobacco Peter back then but often came back to the McBarens Plum Cake - very aromatic.

Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2019

If my house had a “by the glass” program, this would be on it. All melon and flint. Understated in the right way with an acid tattoo. — 2 months ago

Clos Reyssié Pouilly-Fuissé Chardonnay 2017

Bright yellow. Clear. A bit closed on the nose, ripe apples, peach, honey, oak. Dried fruits, orange on palette. Acid. Tangy or spicy. Silky, medium finish. Tasted in May 2021 at BigMacs&Burgundy book event by Alliance Francaise. — a month ago

Le Petit Saint Vincent Saumur Champigny Cabernet Franc 2018

Chucked bottle prematurely, so I think was a 2019. Saumur reds, ie, in this case 100% cab franc seemed to have bulked up the last few years. Yes, it’s a richer, deeper wine but does the ripeness suit the varietal, at least in the Loire? Here I would say yes. Plenty for Chinon lovers- gobs of red fruits, like crushed raspberries & cranberries, but bay leaf too on back end- it’s a nice longish finish. — a month ago

Saint Amour Gamay 2018

The Beaujolais wine we love to taste. Carbonic maceration that brings explosive and intoxicating fruity, coupled with pigeage in the Burgundian style, and partial ageing in barrels bringing delicate tertiary notes. The colour is bright red, typical of a Saint-Amour. The bouquet is ripe and floral red fruit, with beautiful herbaceous notes. The tannins are fine but well marked. The finish is stretched on freshness, strawberry and flowers. It's a lot of fun.
