Correcting last entry to Jackass Hill... Round three on the Zinfandel Showdown and this is the hands down winner!! Only 63 cases made of this amazing nectar. Jackass Hill Zinfandel vines were planted by the Martinellis 100 years ago and the slope is at 60 degrees...which makes it almost impossible to farm...but thank god they do! A beautiful and heavy-handed styled wine (probably influenced by Helen Turley who guided the Martinellis early on). 17%+ alcohol really packs a punch. Structured and expressive. If you can find it...get 3! Thank you Randy Burleson! — 8 years ago

Exceptionally well-done. This actually has some notes of the Kobayashi I drank recently, although this had more alcohol. The wine had some smooth, grippy tannins (more than I recall from last time) — maybe I didn’t stand the bottle upright early enough (the winemaker calls for one week). I didn’t observe that. This wine gets better with air, winemaker calls for three hours. Best drunk cool. This is 63% petite syrah, 22.1% mourvèdre, 11.5% graciano and 3.4% viognier. 16.0% ABV, 98 points Robert Parker. $250. — a year ago
Dark Inky in color with a deep purple rim. This Petite Syrah is not showing age at all.
Fruity nose with oak, cola, vanilla, licorice, cherries, blackberries, figs, alcohol, raisins, peppercorn, leather, spices, mint, coffee chocolates and smoke.
Full-bodied and bold, yet elegant and smooth, with medium plus acidity and gorgeous legs.
Dry and fruity on the palate, with blackberries, figs, cooked plums, sweet cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, light cloves, coffee, bitter herbs, light vegetables and lots of peppercorn.
Long finish with firm and round tannins, and black pepper.
This 10 year old Petite Sirah, is very fruit forward and complex, with many layers, and nicely balanced. Needs three hours to fully open up.
Would probably be just as good in the next three years. Good by itself and would definitely be awesome with a big piece of steak on the grill.
I paired it with light appetizers and Cheeses, and with some nice weather by the pool.
100% Petite Sirah. 63% from Lake County and 37% from Napa Valley.

Second winery on day two in Sonoma was Hanzell Vineyards with Whitney. Last wine was the Hanzell Pinot Noir, which is their flagship Pinot Noir bottling. All the fruit comes from three of their estate vineyards with an average age of 26 years; de Brye, Sessions and Ambassador's 1953 vineyards. This bottling is fermented for a five-day cold soak and 10% is whole cluster. Aged for 18 months in 63% new French oak barrels (60 gallon).
Medium garnet red with light ruby edges. Love the nose, like a true high-end Burgundian Pinot Noir. Layered with cedar, spices, sandalwood, raspberries, tobacco, purple flowers, white pepper and a touch of dark citrus. Medium plus acidity (7/10) and medium plus bodied. Elegant yet balanced with cherries, red berries, spices, Provencal herbs and forest floor. Long and never-ending finish. Drink till 2035.
$$$ - Tasted at the winery. Retail price is $98.00. — 7 years ago
Owned by Ferruccio Lamborghini, yes, the same inventor of the sportscar, Lamborghini Umbria Campoleone 2006 is a magnanimous blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Merlot. While it won't take you from zero-to-sixty in less than three seconds, it sports a generous nose of black plums, steeped blackberries, leather, anise and flowers. On the palate, there is ample plump, juicy fruit—black cherries and spice and amid layers of ripe tannins, and enough acidity to provide both lift and length. Tasty and easy drinking. — 10 years ago
