San Saba Vineyard Syrah
Super heavy bottle. 👎🏻
Color is quite saturated. Nose is NOT shy; kind of shakes it in your face in a very suggestive way. Ash pit earthiness overlaid on almost port-like fruit. In the mouth it’s very soft, mouthfilling, and voluptuous. Fruit is a bit too much on the ripe side for my taste. Not pruney, though, thankfully. I detect a bit of residual sugar, too. Nice length, and the tannin is very soft and buried in the cascade of fruit. With air, some savory components come out to complexify the fruit. Orin Swift fans will like this a lot, but it’s a bit too showy and over-the-top for my taste.

Rich, exciting nose shows Walla Walla-like notes of fire pit, roasted root vegetables, and dark-skinned mountain berries. Dark, soft, and rich in the mouth. Low acidity. Flavors are quite savory and chewy, with a lot of smoky mineral notes. There’s also quite a whack of jammy fruit that is a little on the simple side. For a little over $20 (if I recall correctly) from Garagiste, it’s a good value.

Jan 23rd, 2024Beautiful old world, new world. Rich black fruit. Syrah-old-world pepper in wet layers. Balsamic black berry. Teriyaki jerky. Will be an animal in another 5-10yr age.

Sep 6th, 2019Whoa. Big. Drink now for big fruit, drink later for softer acidity and rounder tannins...either way you win!

Nov 11th, 2014Big, rich, earthy with a very subtle fecal (Brett?) note in its aromas and on the palate, acidity seems a little low, alcohol (14.6%) shows in the medium-long finish, very good domestic Syrah.

Tannin: Medium+
Typicity: High
A whiff of nail polish blew off after a couple minutes in the glass, after which there were super classic Syrah flavors of blackberry, black pepper, smoky meat, and blueberry. Tasty stuff if you are into old-world Syrah like me. If not you might not be a fan!
