Wittmann
Aulerde Großes Gewächs Riesling
Initially a touch of TDN which didn’t persist and was only slight. Mid Gold in colour. Pineapple juice, fresh herbs and flinty mineral. A tart note which had disappeared by the following night. The palate shows yellow peach - so much flavour that it tricks you into thinking off dry but at 13.6%ABV it finishes dry. That high alcohol for a Riesling gives the palate an intensity and enhanced flavour. Medium plus acidity.

Jun 19th, 2023One of the least appealing GGs to me. A bit ripe and without the tension of the other much more precise examples in this tasting. Maybe because the Niveau is that high in this special vintage. Nevertheless a good GG.

Oct 23rd, 20151Apricot & some white peach, pure & crisp. V. Linear on the palate with zippy acidity, broader & more fruity on the mid palate with some peach & green pineapple. And then zippy mineral linear & long finish. Very, very good.

Sep 14th, 2023Popped yesterday. Better on Day 2 open. On the nose: lemon, nettle, guava, stone. On the palate: electric acidity, lovely density, a touch shorter than other Wittmann GGs, but good minerality and mirrors the nose. Lovely.

May 3rd, 2023Pop and pour. Wow. This is stunning right now, and maybe the best version of this wine I've tasted at this stage. On the nose: sweet apple cotton candy, mint, salt. On the palate: salted apple, melon, amazing acidity and density. Fantastic.

Jan 23rd, 2023Sadly, my final btl. Notes from Day 2 open. On the nose: guava, melon, nettle, lemon and loads of mineral notes. On the palate: fantastic acidity, stone, peach, guava, and a touch of leesiness. Good length on the finish. Yum!

Nov 23rd, 2022Oops, forgot I had this in April. Drank alongside a '14 Roulot Bourg Blanc, and paired with a pasta with morel and scallion (light) cream sauce, with some seared scallops on top. This was far and away the better pairing, but it was fun to contrast the two '14s. With the cream sauce, the perceived acidity was perfect for my palate, so an excellent showing, really showcasing the minerality and citrus. Yeah it's Tuesday, but many pandemic-related restrictions were eased today here in cali. What that actually means remains to be seen...
