Currently about 5 hours east of Melbourne in east Gippsland tasting this brilliant William Downie Pinot Noir. See several previous Delectable notes from earlier vintages. This wine manages to combine light to medium weight with medium plus intensity. Red fruited with Sous Bois. Downie is a gifted winemaker working in an excellent terroir for Pinot Noir. Would like to have more access to his wines up in Queensland.

Crystal clear bright Ruby in colour. Blue and red fruits combined with loam and stalks - forest floor notes. Great extraction on the palate but not overly so. Medium plus verging on profound intensity. I am a long time fan of Bass Phillip who are in Gippsland and this is made by the gifted younger winemaker William Downie. An exceptional Pinot which could be cellared for another 5 years if so desired. Prior notes from October last year still apply. I had my final bottle 131 weeks later on 1st February 2023. Still a stunning Pinot with the exceptional Gippsland terroir shining through.

Top pinot
Lots of depth, personality and length of flavor
Crisp like a white and almost as complex as a Burgundian pinot
I am very pleased here

Dark ruby with purple tints. Dark cherry and foresty aromas combined with earth and stalks. Good extraction but not overly so - medium ++ intensity verging on profound intensity. I am a long time fan of Bass Phillip who are based in Gippsland - this wine is from Gippsland made by gifted young winemaker, William Downie This is a very good new world Pinot Noir - easily of Premier Cru standard. Still with more complexity to give with 4 to 6 more years cellaring. The following night - a dead ringer for Bass Phillip Premium with those earthy dark cherry aromas and that delicious sappy palate of M+ Intensity. Wonderful.

Forgot to take a photo of the Half Bottle at No. 19 Restaurant at The Darling at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast. This was the 2017 William Downie from Gippsland. Interested to try this as Gippsland is the home of Bass Phillip, one of the most accomplished makers of Pinot Noir in Australia as is William Downie. This was more beetroot and earthy root vegetables than red fruits with classic Burgundian sappiness. A classy effort although has some developing to do.

So sour it reminded me of a Lambic
Honestly I'd drink it cause I like acidity no matter what, but I would try to wait at least 3/4 years before giving it another go
(I love William Downie by the way)

One of my favourite Downie wines on release..... Might have lost a bit of up and go over the years.... Or maybe a dumb phase of development?

One of the best pinot I've had from Down Under so far | William Downie spent some time in Burgundy, having worked at Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey Chambertin and Hubert Lignier in Morey St Denis. In 2003 he started his eponymous label in Victoria | 2012 William Downie Gippsland
