Brauneberger Juffer Auslese Riesling

Much better cool and on the second day. Complex nose of honey, slate, mineral, peach, apricot, porcini, spice and wild mint. The palate is juicy, ripe, honeyed and very pure, with good acidity completely integrated into the wine. The finish initially seems short, then unexpectedly returns and keeps changing, although not in an entirely cohesive way. It is like a 30-minute David Lynch film. Strange, compressed, complex and ultimately compelling. Great mature Auslese.

Splash decanted just prior to service. The 1989 pours a deep yellow color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is clean and laden with tangerine, carmelized pineapple and assorted orchard fruit: pear, peach, ripe golden delicious apple, along with honey, chamomile, wet asphalt, and almond skin. On the palate, the wine is off-dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Absolutely stunning and seemingly evergreen. Drink now through…I don’t know, 2039+? Outrageous. Nose is all petroleum, honey, dried and wet mushrooms and so much umami. Palate has energy for days and unreal finesse and my god this is juicy. A real classically styled Auslese before Oechsle inflation.

Every time we open a wine from Brauneberger Juffer, I wonder why anyone makes wines from other vineyards in Germany 😂
