I had this lovely wine last Sunday night at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. This is the best Cabernet blend from Vasse Felix and is different from the other premium Cabernet blends in Margaret River because it has 17% old vine Malbec (originally planted by Dr. Tom Cullity himself in 1967 and are the original vines planted in Margaret River). Of course it was infanticide drinking this superb wine at only 7 years of age………but sometimes you have to do these things!! I swear I could detect the presence of the Malbec on the nose as it was so different from the other big name neighbours like Moss Wood, Woodlands and Cullen. A beautiful floral nose of roses and violets. I have been collecting the Tom Cullity since the first vintage in 2013 through to 2019 but for some reason never bought the 2017. This is the first Cullity we’ve had. Just waiting for my cellared examples to get some age. HH gave this wine 98 points and a drinking window of 2021 to 2041.

Best Australian red I have ever had (have not tasted too many, this one encourages me). Blackberries, eucalyptus and cedar at first, then on to black olives and plums, and spices, and white flowers. Coffee. Good body, present tannins, quality ones, and great length and youth. Soooooooo good. This wine is like a rainbow

Inky ruby. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, incense, vanilla, exotic spices and candied flowers, and a smoky oak nuance builds slowly in the glass. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering wonderfully concentrated yet lively cherry liqueur, black currant, fruitcake, lavender pastille and mocha flavors that are accented by cracked pepper and mineral flourishes. Shows outstanding energy and smoky persistence on the dark-fruit- and floral-dominated finish, which features building spiciness and youthfully gripping tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, July 2021)

In Langtons Outstanding category from the September 2018 tasting. A new Cuvée from Vasse Felix showcasing their oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec Blocks and honouring their founder Tom Cullity. Needless to say a brilliant Cabernet blend showing the best of Margaret River. Will live for decades.

With the irrepressible Virginia Willcock. A cracking cab. Savoury, elegant, but powerful. With red snapper over fire, with saltbush, costal rosemary, beach mustard, dune spinach.
