“Mountain Zin” from an early 1900s vineyard set among cedars at 1500’ elevation in Mendocino. Purplish with a pink rim, sweet nose — blackberry pie and a hint of cocoa? On the palate though, thin, acidic, little fruit. Came back to it a few days later (Coravin) and it had improved somewhat. Past vintages were much better.

This is a unique and very good wine. From 100 year old vines at high elevation in Mendocino, it is loaded with zesty, acidic (in a great way) dark fruit. It’s wonderful deep berry nose didn’t convert in the mouth at first, but with a bit of air, the fruit, and some light tannins came out, maybe even a hint of the pines surrounding the vineyard. Plenty of room to run on this great but far-from-typical Zin.
