Drinking great. Picked up at auction for a song. Pepper rounding tannins. Blue fruits.

An absolutely brilliant offering from Adam Tolmach at The Ojai Vineyard. Haven't had this one since 2006. Drinking beautifully, this wine has developed so well. I think years ago Adam was characterized as picking his fruit too late, but now he's at the forefront of picking the grapes early enough to still retain enough acidity to allow it to age. This wine has character and complexity to put "modern" wines to shame. Cheers to old-school wine making...and to The Ojai Vineyard!

Deep brooding big syrah. Blue and black fruits. Still very young. Toasty oak notes. A little leather & some spice. Great bottle of wine. Wow!

2002 Ojai Thompson Vineyard Syrah.
A real winner from Adam Tomah at Ojai. Super rich and great concentration. A real fruit bomb but with some elegance and mystery.

Amazingly, this treasure, my last bottle of the saturated purple '99 Ojai Syrah 'Thompson Vineyard', was much fresher and significantly fruitier than the previous bottle consumed about a year ago. This one I drank immediately after decanting (with copious sediment). Super dense aromatics and smoky flavors of dark fruit, damp earth, cracked pepper, leather and licorice abounded. The silky finish was long, powerful and eminently satisfying.

After a two hour decant, with an enormous amount of sediment, the inky reddish purple '99 Ojai Syrah 'Thompson Vyd.' no longer exhibited its youthful blackberry aromas. They were replaced with gamey stewed fig, plum and bacon fat scents. Spicy black pepper and mocha flavors in the mid-palate with fully resolved tannins. A long sweet finish. I definitely need to drink my last bottle really soon.
