Visually, slight bricking has begun.
Nose displays tertiary notes of tobacco, brown sugar and wood. Palate is consistent with the nose, moderate tannins and acidity still support the mature black fruits and coffee notes. If you like wine on its youthful side, this vintage is beyond that point.

Think my rating here is slightly below others, but the only reason that is is due to its current stage. I believe this will jump 2 points or so in the next few years. Right now though, it’s a bit disjointed. I don’t have much experience with this vineyard so I’m not sure of its normal profile. Very dark red and black fruit dominant. Pipe tobacco, charcoal and blackberries. A bit hot on both the nose and palate. Boysenberry, tar, licorice, cassis, black cherry with a tannic-grip finish. Needs a few years to strut what it can be.

Fruit bomb with a unforgettable berry finish that I couldn’t get rid of, half price but still feel ripped off.

I’ll try any 2011 at 60% discount, I’d be a little upset paying release price of over $200.00 though.
Overall just plain boring.

I have been saving the three 2013 The Debate bottlings to open at the same time with close friends, but alas, COVID strikes again. I love the concept behind The Debate, and had hoped to truly get to dissect the differences between the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Beckstoffer To Kalon, and Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper vineyards. A few months ago the doctor crane absolutely blew me away and I would have given that a 9.8 probably. This bottling was also quite impressive. Such purity of fruit, it knew exactly who it was and what it was bringing to the table. More specific notes another time. If only the price point didn’t demand such a commitment($250 per bottle x3!) then I would purchase multiple sets every year in order to be able to go through this exercise.
