Brings back Sicily to my mind! Rusty tannins but also the smell of Etna

I’ve been enjoying the wines of Tenuta delle Terre Nere since I was first introduced to them a handful of years ago or so. One thing that is very obvious is how much their wines vary from vintage to vintage...sometimes it’s dramatic. This 2017 vintage is predominantly dark fruited with powerful, almost rustic tannins. A slightly hulking verson of Nerello Mascalese that doesn’t need a lot of thought. Quaffable. Drink now but could hold for a few years with ease, but why?

Even the entry level wine is exciting. Brilliant fruit and pungent volcanic terroir.

2017 vintage. Excellent tension between elegance, delicate fruit, and tightly-wound tannic structure. Floral hibiscus and violet aromas with cranberry, tart cherry, pomegranate, red plum, autumn leaves, green tea, and tree bark flavors. Great streak of acidity and tannins are still quite tight. Tasty with a very long finish.

Very high quality Sicily at this price point. Lithe, light, little luscious. Zing.

Smells of cherry, dry mushrooms and wet wood.
Good tannins but you feel the alcohol a bit. In my opinion I should have waited 2-3 years before opening it.
This wine has the potential to score 9.1/9.2 in couple of years.
