Combe Ballard Canyon Trousseau
California, USAIt’s been a little bit but I’m back and with some delicious stuff like this new world trousseau loving it: Black cherries and turned earth also loved the black tea descriptor than a lot of people used in previous notes! 🥳

This was a head scratcher. Combe is a joint partnership between Stolpman and Rajat Parr. Certainly not as floral or sweet as Arnot Roberts Trousseau or even Sandlands. This was like a more herbal version of Cru Beaujolais, minus the carbonic maceration. Super tight and locked up on day 1, gaining more savory and herbal notes on day 2. Cloudy in the glass. Oregano dusted cherries and sour red fruit gummies on the nose. On day 2, it gained a salted/cured meat savory note too. Puréed strawberries with bay leaf and peppercorn on the finish. Acidity and tannins are down the middle, but this seems to be a bit more structured (ie, less gummy) than other Trousseaus I’ve had. Seems organic. Best enjoyed with a slight chill.

Needs a minute yet. The pieces are all there (tea/strawberry/rocks), but need some space to get out of eachothers way. I love that this wine is completely happy to be itself, not striving to be Jurassic, not feeling like it needs to play to the Cali expectations.

Strawberry tea joy in a bottle. Full on Central valley Driscoll strawberries rather than the cute, delicate, wild alpine strawberries you might find in an old world example. The tea is pretty much the same, tho. Glug, glug, gone

The Stolpman family is on a tear! Thanks Raj for talking them into planting this, it's quite rad! Very delicate, strawberry, tea, crazy electric raspberry color. Big fun! Can't wait to try the petillant naturale!!

Only the 6th vintage of this exciting wine made of Trousseau grapes (aka Bastardo) which is for example used in port. Cloudy, viscous, rather dark color; pinot noir-like nose with added selleri, te leaves, and vanillin; red-fruity and sumptuous on the palate, great midpalate and finish, and with a kick from the respectable acid levels. Yes, it is light bodied and juicy; but Yes it is delicious. Best I can put it: a mix between a Julienas gamay, a NZ pinot noir, and a dash of cool aid. Had with Danish Vesterhavs-cheese, lomo iberico and green tomato marmelade.
