Smoking Loon
The Original California Merlot
Deep red with big red fruit aromas and crushed spice. On the palate blackberry and tart cherry flavors with some espresso notes. Tannins are a bit harsh and a little hot with an alcohol burn. Pass, not worth it. Tasting Sample.

Mar 5th, 2018Ruby in color with medium intensity and a reddish rim.
Fruity nose of plums, cherries, stewed strawberries, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, smoke, earth, peppermint, light coffee and black pepper.
Medium plus in body with medium acidity and nice legs.
Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, strawberries, currants, vanilla, licorice, cloves, wood, earth and peppercorn.
Short finish with soft tannins and tangy cranberries.
This is a simple Merlot from Chile. Nicely balanced and easy drinking. Not as fruity as their red blend, but the tangy ending makes it interesting.
Good right out of the bottle, and good for parties or as a sipping wine.
13.5% alcohol by volume.

I quite liked this wine. Definitely oakey (oaky?) but with a good sweetness. I enjoyed a glass with my steak. Had excellent legs but a little bit of a bitter aftertaste. Not sure if that was real or my inability to breathe properly due to allergies.

Jan 17th, 2017Ruby in color with medium
intensity and a purplish rim.
Nice nose of blueberries, cherries, licorice, oak, vanilla, light cloves, earth, green vegetables, herbs, green olives, animal notes, spices and black pepper.
Medium bodied with medium acidity and nice legs.
Dry and fruity on the palate with strawberries, black currants, plums, bell pepper, cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, earth, bitter herbs and black pepper.
Medium finish with soft tannins and peppercorn.
A nice Chilean Merlot. Simple, but drinks well now, even by itself. Good right out of the bottle, but I let it breath, in the bottle, for a couple of hours.
A Good party wine too. Drinks better while it is still young and fresh. Not one to age. Nice and balanced with a spicy kick.
I paired it with hard cheeses, crackers and strawberries.
As it opens up (4 hours), it becomes more savory with dried beef, cola and vegetables.
