The 2019 Gaisberg 1.ÖTW, from Schloss Gobelsburg in Austria’s Kamptal, is quite simply one of the greatest young Rieslings I’ve tasted.
It has a pronounced nose, with incredible clarity to the aromas of freshly squeezed lime, elderflower and lavender, and a faint hint of petrichor - overall it’s citrusy, but has a great floral character.
The palate - wow. Great intensity, with very juicy flavours of green apple, lime juice, nectarine, white pepper, blueberry even, cut along a very acidic frame that leaves the mouth watering and finishes bone-dry. It’s unmistakably Riesling, and could even fool you into perceiving some sweetness.
This is a powerful white that combines bold, ripe flavours with high acidity, distinct minerality and a long, scintillating finish. I have immediately bought more.
