Superb wine to start the evening. The nose was surprisingly open, especially for this producer - pineapple, grapefruit, sea breeze, fresh herbs, and white flowers. Stacked and powerful, you can really feel a pressure weighing down on the palate yet in typical Schäfer-Fröhlich manner, the finesse and elegance of the wine is undeniable, courtesy of the piercing acidity, herbaceous-ness, and long salty finish. While it drank well, I do feel it still needs time to shed more baby fat and bring more seamlessness. For such a strong performance, it was surprisingly not the white of the night.

Feb 9th, 2019A nose of petrol and bright crisp apples on the palate. Give it some air and it gains some sticky chewy weight. Beautifully paired with some celery root soup that must have had some slight cinnamon spice.

The nose was intense, savory, almost briny, yet so pleasurable, as notes of olive, sea foam and crushed stone were offset by green apple, sweet melon and fresh herbs. On the palate, I found soft textures contrasted by stunning minerality and a zing of vibrant acidity with notes of tart apple, lemon rind and spice. It seemed to buzz of the finish, as zesty acidity lingering among citrus tinged minerals.

2013 was a lousy vintage in Germany yet it also produced interesting wines in the Grand Cru Vineyards. This is one of them. High acid - salty - sharp and edgy profile - needs more time to mellow out still way to young - Lemon 🍋 and Kaffir limes. Peach 🍑 back palate. Hint Bergamot. Wait!

Always a favorite of mine, this 2015 version of the Felseneck from Tim Fröhlich also (like many other vintages before) has nearly no fruit aromas. Tons of wet stones & herbs are dominating here. Laser like acidity, lean & medium body, long, elegant finish. This is one of the most consequent implemented GGs I know. Perfect picture of its Terroir.

Nov 23rd, 2016In the beginning quite closed, needs a lot of air. Than the SLO vanishes and will be replaced by wonderful slate driven ripe yellow fruit, Grapefruit, salt.
Bone dry, extremely driven by mineral notes, good, ripe acidity and a long finish. This wine is still a baby and needs lots of air and big stemware at the moment. Long and great future ahead.
