Dear friends of ours, a couple so delightful in spirit that they adopt aged, abandoned dogs, clean them up and make sure they have the most sublime last few years of their lives, invited us over to visit their latest pooch. Their newly rescued fourteen year old terrier, Audrey, was looking vibrant with glossy coat and waggy tail. A far cry from the dusty critter from the shelter's photograph.
Audrey wasn't the only aging beauty that our friends shared with us that evening. They very kindly opened this 1986 Robert Mondavi. Despite its age, at thirty two the wine retained a good deal of freshness with focused aromatics. High toned fruit, dried leaves and subtle leather combine on the palate and evolve through the long finish. Like Audrey, my tail was wagging.

Wow 1986 Robert Mondavi Cab from Oakville donated by Henry and Val! Opened with a group of friends. Showing great for 31 yrs old. Black fruits, cassis, great depth, reminds be of a classic Bordeaux. Label said 12.5 alcohol which made this wine hold together I think. I give this a solid 93+ Rating in my book. Thank you Robert Mondavi Sr.

Feb 18th, 2017Outstanding bottle. Fruit leather, dried black currants, still some tart plum skin and blackberry. Long finish on notes of cedar, licorice, dried tobacco and hints of dried vanilla pod. Nice bit of acid as well. 12.5 ABV. Always great to taste history like this.

Nose of menthol, saddle leather and tobacco. Some candied cherry, blackberry, eucalyptus, sage and leather. At its end.

Drinking perfectly. 12.5% balance of fruit, tannin & weight; the window is open but only for another year or two. Thank you Michael Apstein

The label maybe going, but not the wine. Evolving, taking it's time to open with dusty dark fruits and ample rounded tannins.
