Hailing from one of the premier sites in the Santa Lucia Highlands, planted in 1996, the 2022 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard is flat-out gorgeous. Beautifully rendered, it boasts generous fruit density, crystal-clear delineation of flavors and bracing structure. Fully destemmed, the 2022 finishes with a ton of persistence in its dark berry flavors, even darker cherry, black licorice and black sage. The 2022 leaves behind a fine web of powdery tannins, neatly wrapped up with a little bow on top, concentrated, effusive, and ready to rock. What a complete package. This may be the red wine of the vintage in the SLH. (Billy Norris, Vinous, August 2024)

Sipping Fine Wine

Medium Ruby color with layered aromas of fresh berry fruits with floral and woodsy spice notes. On the palate flavors of strawberry and ripe raspberry with cigar box, oak, black tea, citrus, cola and herb floral notes. Well balanced, savory fine tannins, long finish ending with oaky earthy notes. Nice!

The 2021 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard is laced with bright red-toned fruit, dried herbs, rose petals, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco. This is an especially savory Pinot in the range. The aromatics are quite alluring today, but the wine is much less expressive on the palate, where it feels very tight at this stage. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, November 2023)

Excellent Roar, although Gary’s Vineyard fruit offers more acidity and some astringency. A little off balance. Complex. Keeps Truckin’ On….

A lineup of 10 August West and Roar Pinots, 2007-2011, all made by wine maker Ed Kurtzman, who attended our tasting. The alcohol seemed to dominate this one.

Fantastic winery and great vineyard and great vintage - this is blueberry with a little forrest floor. Such a treat - plus there’s no looting (at least here)!
