Reynvaan Family Vineyards
In the Hills Estate Syrah
Deep, inky Ruby color. It’s 90% Syrah co-fermented with 10% viognier and the funky nose of barnyard and grilled meat gives way to forest floor, blackberry, black olives, black pepper, leather, sage and thyme (yes maybe even a touch of lavender). The connection to the northern Rhône is unmistakable alongside a New World emphasis on black fruit. This is still young and with another couple of years the diverse elements should come together in a glorious package. Long finish

Dec 27th, 2020I love this wine. Smoky, meaty, cured meats, red and purple flowers, white Pepper, Mediterranean herbs, lavender.... not at all what I expected from a Walla Walla Syrah. Tangy and vibrant, not at all heavy though it has tremendous structure without being heavy or clunky. big love. Drinking the 2013.

Mar 23rd, 2020The 2016 'In The Hills' Syrah is a gorgeous showing in this vintage from Matt Reynvaan. This begins with inviting aromas of blackberries, smoked meat, wet rocks, Umami, bacon fat and blood orange rind on the highly perfumed nose. The palate shows an absolutely incredible mouthfeel with wonderful freshness and streaks of minerality. The combination of richness and tension is hard to resist right now as the stony character and herbaceousness seems to take center stage. Flavors of black tea, wild blackberry, orange zest and a just a touch of milk chocolate continue to build on the palate. While this should cellar well for a decade, it is simply stunning right now. Drink 2019-2028- 94

Aug 16th, 2019Med weight with nice extraction, fruit, tannins and acid show well at such a young age. Another excellent example of Matt’s attention to detail with Christophe Baron serving as the consultant winemaker.

Apr 19th, 2019Pumped to finally get my hands on some of these guys’ stuff - and this did not disappoint. This is all finesse and just plain drop dead sexy. The “In the Hills” Syrah comes from the family’s estate vineyard and blends in 5% Viognier, ala Cote-Rotie.
The nose goes on for days and brings to mind some of the nicer Cote-Roties of France.. with gamey olive brine, black tea, eucalyptus, incense, and red floral notes. The palate is utter silk with savory meaty notes, red fruits, cracked black pepper, and almost a Pinot-like finish. This is a beaut. If this is a sign of what to expect with these guys (which I’m led to believe it is), you need to drop what you’re doing and track some of this stuff down right now. Wow.

Northern Rhone meets Washington! Bright black, red, and blue fruit with definitive game, funk, pepper, and green notes.
