This was a real treat after the Gentaz-Dervieux since Rene Rostaing is Marius Gentaz’s son-in-law. While the vineyards that belonged to Marius are now famously part of the Rostaing domaine, that vineyard goes to Rene’s Côte Brune; this is his Côte Blonde and arguably his most famous bottling. This 2004 pours a cloudy ruby with brambles, purple flowers, blood, dust and leather. Slightly rustic which is what I want from Rostaing. I love the individuality and how it paired with the Iberico pork cheek, mushroom ragu with lavender and thyme. Plenty of life left. Drink through 2034+.

Dark tawny color, mostly opaque. Great nose. Notes of menthol, black fruit, five spice, dark moist soil, anise and some smoked meat. Silky in the mouth. Great now and in a great drinking window. Maybe can improve a bit with more age, but for me this is drinking very well right now.

Dark tawny color. Almost opaque. Awesome aged Cote Rotie nose. Notes of black fruit, menthol, spice, dark soil and slate stone. Long finish. A really good wine.

Decanted for a few hours before checking in. Purple reddish color. Earthy nose. Notes of black currants, crushed granite, blueberries, some funk, some menthol and some dark soil. What it has in the nose is missing in the mouth…. Not as good as the last bottle… not very exciting nor impactful. Today it’s all about the nose.

Dark tawny. Burgundian nose. Notes of raspberries, earth, black cherries, smoked meats, some spice. Smooth and silky in the mouth. Tannins resolved. Good wine, missing the weight of a bigger vintage.

Dark scarlet color, almost opaque. Meaty, hearty nose. Notes of black cherry, pepper and spice, smoked meats, slate stone and a little kirsch. Great balance in the mouth. Lasting finish. Good showing.

A superb vintage for Rostaing and the Northern Rhône. Intensely perfumed and seductive on the nose. Further reveals smoke, black raspberries and currants and hints of charred meats and spices. Finishes with excellent length and depth. A tremendous showing after a 2 hour decant. Only wish I had more bottles to hold!

Reddish tawny and translucent. Thinner and brighter than the older Barolo next to it. Great C-R nose. Notes of granite stone, earth, black cherry, cranberry, a little bacon, blueberries and some old wood. Vibrant in the mouth. Still has young fruit impression, tannins are soft and acidity still gives some pucker. Great future ahead for bottles like this.

A really amazing wine. Good richness and purity. Surely not much in way of stems. Very dark. Tar, spice. Impressive.
