The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is delicate and nuanced with a lifted display of wild strawberries, a dusting of confectioners spice and crushed stone. This is light-bodied with incredible purity, coming across as more savory than expected, with saline-minerals and tart wild berries washing across the palate. It tapers off fresh and a bit crunchy, leaving a staining of fruit concentration and hints of exotic citrus. This may not be on the level of Pian dell’Orino’s best Rossos, but it will provide a lot of pleasure over the next few years. Due to the delicate grape skins in 2018, the production of the Rosso is up, and the Brunello will be down. (Eric Guido, Vinous, January 2022)

Showing a classic and refined Sangiovese bouquet of spiced strawberry, sandalwood, dried flowers, cedar, hints of undergrowth and a dusting of minerals. On the palate, it displayed silky textures contrasted by brisk acidity and youthful tannin, giving way to dark red fruits, inner floral tones and tobacco. Tightly wrapped up in its youth yet compact and intense. The finish was satisfying through a buzz of vibrant acidity giving mouthwatering life to red fruit and spice, while also remaining youthful and structured. It’s a gorgeous bottle of Rosso di Montalcino with a good 5-10 years of development ahead of it.

Beautiful, transparent wine. Lovely cherry. Delicious now, but no rush.

A classic Rosso, this is a really soft, very approachable sangiovese. Lots of primary fruit on the nose (maybe black cherry?), but doesn’t have the earthiness that I typically expect for an Italian red (perhaps 2014 was a warm vintage?). Great flavors, but a little too flat on the palate for my tastes. Probably could have used a bit more contact time with the skins, but then again, Rossos are supposed to be soft and approachable so you can drink them while you wait for the brunellos to come around. Overall a good wine - very enjoyable - but not one to wait on. Drink ‘em if ya got ‘em!
