Patz & Hall
Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay
Last stop on day one in Sonoma was at Patz & Hall Winery. First wine was their Chardonnay from the Hyde Vineyard on the Napa side of Carneros.
Medium lemon yellow in appearance. Light floral notes on the nose to start followed up by some honeysuckle, stone fruits and a little citrus. Medium acidity (6/10) and medium bodied. A little bit of marzipan on the palate with some candied apples and some citrus rind. Medium plus finish. Drink till 2022. $$

Actually rather delicious. Brioche, buttered popcorn, dried fruits, and even a hint of herb which was actually a little more noticeable on the nose than it was on the palate. There was a tiny touch more acidity on the front than the finish, although this wine is actually very well balanced. Has really good weight and density -- medium to medium-full bodied wine. This wine did much better by itself. It DID go well with food and stood up quite well to beef shoulder roast with potatoes and carrots, but it really did not go well with rosemary asiago cheese AT ALL. I'm not sure that this one is going to get any better in the bottle. I'd say that now is the time to start enjoying these. Not my favorite Hyde wine, but definitely not my least favorite either.

Aug 22nd, 2019Zippy. Acidic. Energetic. Sumptuous melon, dried tangerine, nutmeg, lemon, honey, etc. Structured w/ good minerality balance.

May 13th, 2019A benchmark for the best aspects of the California Chardonnay style. Fruit forward of course, but well balanced by acidity, and with an interesting terroir-driven minerality. Modest oak adds interest but only as an accent.
