Paolo Scavino
Cannubi Barolo Nebbiolo
Yesterday I enjoyed the 2014 Paolo Scavino Cannubi Barolo.
On the nose there are wonderful aromas of cherry, strawberry, cranberry, licorice, roses, herbs, leather and fresh tilled soil.
On the palate are beautiful notes of cherry, cranberry, plum, raspberry, licorice, herbaceous, spice and soil.
The wine is medium to full bodied with a soft smooth mouthfeel medium+ acidity and medium + gripping tannins that lead to a long red fruit clay pot finish. I hope everyone has had a restful and battery charging weekend. Have a great week ahead and look forward to our nations birthday. Please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

The 4th wine at the Downs Club Italian Dinner. Brief notes - from the cool wet 2014 vintage in Barolo, saved somewhat by the terroir of the famous Cannubi vineyard. Planted 1946. Not your normal high acid, high tannin Barolo. Menthol/camphor notes, herbal, red fruited, very savoury dry tannins.

Aug 19th, 2022Taken to Selby's in Redwood City. Tawny color, with a deep reddish center and clear rims. Almost opaque. Awesome aged Barolo nose. Notes of a cup of dark red fruit, tea, rose petals, anise, mocha and some balsamic thing. Great balance of the remaining fruit with softened tannins. In a great spot for drinking.

Aug 1st, 2022Decanted 3 hours before serving. Quiet nose. A bit dusty. Notes of black cherry, some tobacco leaf, a bit of plum, some wood and some spice. The nose correlates to the mouth feel - tannins are integrated, but this is a bit muted in its delivery. Doubt this gets much better from here and is ready to drink.

Jan 29th, 2022Light brownish tawny, thin and translucent. Enticing nose. Notes of rose petals, earth, balsamic, some molasses and some red cherries. Smooth and silky in the mouth. Caught this bottle at a great time, it’s an awesome accompaniment to tonight’s lasagna.

Jan 23rd, 2021Just in a fantastic place. Redolent of roses, oolong tea, minerals and earth. Blackberries on the palate. Lovely integration and fine tannins. Super lithe. Very much enjoyed it.

Oct 18th, 2020Tonight's wine is the 2014 Paolo Scavino Cannubi Barolo. A beautiful wine from the Langhe region of Italy by the Scavino family.
The nose has notes of rose, cherry, menthol, clay pot, light smokey oak, anise and earth.
On the palate there is cherry, raspberry, anise, chocolate, herbs, spice, balsamic, integrated oak and earth.
This wine is medium to full bodied with a rich velvety mouthfeel, medium + to high acidity and medium + to high bold firm round tannins that leads to a long sumptuous finish. I hope everyone is having a nice week and looking forward to the weekend. It looks as though winter is rearranging its head here so please stay safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is another heady, dense wine in this range. Here, too, there is a ton of potential, but at present the 2015 is fruity and primary. I would give it a good few years for some of the baby fat to melt away. Even with all of its textural richness, the 2015 has quite a bit of underlying detail and nuance that emerges with just a bit of aeration. There is plenty to look forward to, that much is clear.
