I think this was the first "experiment". Ovid. Mellow, velvety....like an old Teddy Pendergrass song

A delicious blend of roughly 55% Cab Sauv blended with equal parts Merlot and Petite Verdot, and finished with Cab Franc - this wine was one of the first releases from Ovid and made by then winemaker Andy Erickson. Full bodied and rich - even after 11 years. Black fruits mingle with notes of cedar followed by a long and sweet finish. This was sadly the last of my three bottles. (Tasting notes 2/3, no decant)

From Ovid Vineyards is Experiment E.04, a compelling blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot, 15% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. As one might expect, the Cab Franc contributes an expressive, highly aromatic nose of blueberry crumble, butterscotch, Christmas fruit cake and star anise. Richly textured, with an intriguing creamy countenance that lends density and weight. Finishes with cedar, spice and the merest touch of green bell pepper. Nice acidity and intensity.

A nice full wine at the end of its life but still a joy to drink. Dark fruits with a little smoke. The last bottle in my cellar.

The cab franc is evident in no small amount with a beautiful aromatic and floral nose, and the blend is extremely well balanced. Bigger than a merlot + cab franc, but softer that most Cabernet blends that I’ve had from Napa. Drink now.

Kind of like Wisconsin tonight. 🏀 started off like gangbusters, got a bit soft in the middle, then finished strong, but just a bit short. Great game.

Cassis and blackberry on the palate. Licorice and cedar on the nose

So after an hour of decanting - plus half the still in the bottle - this has a lot of time left - more like a Bordeaux - the first experiment is possibly still the best. Well balanced tannins, blueberry and licorice. Alcohol stayed but not too strong.
