Moss Wood
Wilyabrup Ribbon Vale Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Thank you Moss Wood for this sample bottle of your 2019 Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon - we were so excited to taste it and it’s safe to say that it did not disappoint.
This Cab is actually 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% each of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. It spend 28 months in oak prior to being released.
It’s definitely a wine for the cellar however in its infancy it’s drinking pretty darn well too.
It’s a gorgeous garnet shade in the glass. Aromatic black and red fruits, dark chocolate, coffee beans and cedar wood notes rise from the glass. In the mouth you’d never guess it’s 14% alcohol. It has a super smooth texture and is perfectly balanced with deep juicy flavour. A true pleasure to drink and I can only imagine how exquisite it’ll be in 10, 20 or even 30 years down the track.
All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!

Start the week off on the right note with a good bottle of wine - especially if you’re in WA in lockdown 😷
I kindly received this sample of the Moss Wood 2018 Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon to taste recently (thank you!!) and while it’s most definitely in its infancy, this Margaret River Cab Sauv is going to be enjoyed for years to come. I believe Moss Wood recommend at least 10 years although you’ll be definitely rewarded after 25 years if you have the patience!
We popped it in the decanter to give the wine some time to open up. When you put wine in a decanter the extra air contact helps the aromas and flavours come out and helps to smooth out the acidity and tannins.
Here’s a few points to note on this wine:
🍷 Handpicked
🍷 Its a blend of 96% Cab Sauv, 2% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc
🍷 Aged in 16% new French oak barrels
Read the very thorough production and tasting notes on the Moss Wood website.
In the glass, we found it a deep purple red shade. I find notes of vanillin oak and dark berries, cherries and currants dominating the nose. It’s wonderfully fruit driven, elegant and simply gorgeous with its long lasting flavour on the palate.
This #wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

Go on treat yourself, it’s the holiday season 😉🍷
That’s exactly what we did with this 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon sample we kindly received from Moss Wood in Margaret River (thank you!).
Ribbon Vale is the name of one of the Moss Wood vineyards (they have 3). It was first planted in 1977 and comprises of 6.36 hectares. It’s unirrigated and is made up of gravelly loams over clay sub-soils.
2017 was a great vintage for the Margaret River and especially Moss Wood. The grapes 🍇 for this Cab were handpicked, malolactic fermentation took place and the wine spent time in French oak (13% new barrels).
We popped this one in the decanter prior to drinking it. It’s tasting great now but it’ll definitely evolve with time in the cellar, in fact on the Moss Wood website they say full maturity will be reached after 25 years!
Here’s how it went down in its youth..
On the eye it’s a dark garnet shade. While on the nose there’s vanilla oak mixed with drunken berries (blackberries and currants) and a bit of leather. I was drunk in love on the first whiff! In the mouth it’s full and voluptuous with black currants and cherries coming through alongside a hint of smokiness. Very refined and one you’ll want to re-taste in 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years!
This beauty retails for $77 which you can buy via mosswood.com.au

Second label for the vineyard but beautiful composition in this blend. Light, floral tones, undercarriage of fruit and tanins pull this together. Should age well
