Mollydooker Wines
Velvet Glove McLaren Vale Shiraz
Inky in color with a short reddish rim.
Fruity nose of blackberries, sweet plums, cooked cherries, raisins, dried figs, alcohol, licorice, vanilla, cedar, cola, spices, milk chocolates, tobacco and peppercorn.
Full bodied, smooth and bold, with medium acidity and long legs.
On the palate black currants, cooked plums, sweet cherries, vanilla, spices, cedar, espresso, cola, light herbs, licorice, mocha and red chili pepper.
Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.
This is a very tasty Shiraz from Australia. Big and bold, and somewhat sweet. Has a lot of acidity on the finish for all that fruit. Rich and extracted.
Very much "in your face" kind of wine, and not for the faint of heart. Feels very much like a Napa Syrah, with a teeth staining color.
Needs a couple hours to open up properly, which I didn't have, as it finished too quickly.
Needs 5 years in the bottle to mature properly, and calm down a bit. Will be a 95+ wine in 10 years. Will age nicely in the next 15 years.
Wine Spectator 95 points. Robert Parker 96 points.
Good as a sipping wine, and good with food too. Will pair nicely with BBQ Meats. I paired it with a Charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.
16% alcohol by volume.
92 points.
$215.

Pure velvet, no glove detected. Good, high extraction of pure fruit and layers of jam, berry, beef blood. Powerful meaty nose. Paradoxically this fell off a bit after 1st hr of decant.

May 29th, 2022This is a wine that I normally find is best enjoyed in its youth as it’s an absolute sensory experience from all angles.
I popped this thinking it would be roaring out of the gate, but it was actually quite subdued. After 30mins in the decanter, the room almost filled with the aromatics…wave after wave of rich, decadent dark fruits dipped in fondue, with vanilla baking spice, and espresso. While it was fairly bombastic on the palate, it wore the high ABV fairly well…there was a “creaminess” about this wine which was unique. Dark cocoa covered blueberries and blackberries, black currant, and plenty of dark roasted plum. Big structure and tannin, but the finish is “velvet” like.
I’d say this will hang in this window for a few more years before shedding some of the primary fruit, but this seems to be made to enjoy while the fireworks are still bright.

The 2018 Mollydooker ‘The Velvet Glove’ Shiraz is a utterly sensational bottling that rivals any wine of its kind. Aged in all new American oak, this shows a gorgeous bouquet from blueberry pie to espresso grounds, graphite and toasty oak tones that all impress. The palate is deep and utterly seamless. A massive core of blue and dark fruits collide with white pepper, minerals, firm tannins and a light dusting of salinity. While obviously big, this has a weightless quality and wonderful verve. Wonderful to enjoy now, this outstanding Shiraz will provide drinking enjoyment for at least another fifteen years. But why wait? Drink 2021-2038- 98

Mar 22nd, 20212014, I know there style is not about finesse but I would expect more acidity coming from a cool year in McLaren Vale. Huge blue fruit and a hint of that black olive. It is not a shy wine

Nov 28th, 2017Hmmm., over the top, over the extracted and should be served cold. Think about it..,,,who wants to drink cool aid with sugar warm?? Doesn’t taste quite right!! Loll
I’m not sure if the juice is worth the squeeze but it does drink very well cold At the end of the night!!

1 person found it helpfulMar 10th, 2023Firstly we wanted to thank @Martin G Rivard for sharing this bottle with us. Stunning wine and such a treat. Really enjoyed these two beauties from Mollydooker Wines!
Tasted blind, theme was either Napa Cult Wines or High End Australian, not told directly to keep us on our toes.
Darkest of the lot so far, with a deep purplish red. Rich nose of caramel, black fruits, sweet spices and a touch of heat too. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Rich, extracted and powerful on the palate. Layers of perfumed purple flowers, a bit creamy, tons of sweet spices, and dark fruits. Well balanced acidity. Insanely long finish. Drink till 2033.
The third wine, and without a doubt an insanely young Australian Shiraz. Needed the extra day for the heat to dissipate. This was decanted for three hours on day one, could have used more time.
