Matchbook Wine Co.
Black's Station Yolo County Cabernet Sauvignon
Yolo County, Central Valley, California, USA

Decent cab, actually surprisingly good for Yolo county.

Dark ruby red. On the nose there’s a big chunk of graphite, backed up with black cherries, black currant, and sweet tobacco. Medium bodied with silky tannin. Flavors of black currant, blackberries, tea and a hint of toffee. It finishes dry with blackberries and tea.

Dark inky in color with a short rim.
Light nose of blueberries, blackberries, plums, cherries, currants, oak, vanilla, chocolate
cake, coffee, tobacco and peppercorn.
Medium bodied with medium acidity and nice legs.
Dry on the palate and fruity, with blueberries, plums, cherries, barnyard, earth, leather, green pepper, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices and black pepper.
Medium finish with fine grained tannins and tart cherries.
This California Cabernet is simple and unbalanced. However, it is drinkable. Nothing special on the mouthfeel either. Another year in the bottle might help a bit...
A little tart to drink by itself, but will pair better with food.
13.9% alcohol by volume.

More subtle aromas and flavors, lighter on the palate, still some good tannins. Just not as balanced and pleasing; a good one to have gone into the pot roast.

Dec 10th, 2023Having visited the Matchbook, the nose immediately takes you back to the fields overlooking Zamora. Graphite on the nose with a surprisingly smooth finish, pair with sea salt caramel dark chocolate and this wine punches above its price point of $12

Not a terrible wine, but way outside of what I normally drink...or enjoy...or recommend. COVID has limited my quality wine intake. Certainly manipulated, heavy oak, lack of any varietal characteristics. That being said, perfectly drinkable, just don’t ruminate on it.
