Day 1: Not a better value in aged wine. Period. Green apple, slate, slate, slate and petrol intermingled with smoke and leather. Stunning nose. A bit tight out of the gates but uncoils over 30 minutes and become a symphony of aromas and a typical '96 Mosel with high acid, candied apple, almost apple-tini flavors. Lovely depth and purity. Remarkable wine.
Day 2: Nose is all candied apple/jellybaby with lovely slate and petrol. Almost a foie element as well. That smoke persists as well. Palate has terrific freshness and acids today with deep green apple fruit and a hint of sweetness.

So ready to drink. Secondary and lovely classic Muellen acid, with earthy and mushroomy flavors. This was open a month and still fresh as a daisy. All of Martin's wines can be open forever. It's amazing.

This Riesling is so complete: intense and fresh aromas ranging from lemon, lime, and peach to papaya, mango, passion fruit, and pineapple, plus savoriness like roasted mushrooms and lime leaf, just enough sugar to balance the high but integrated acidity, and a texture that's rich but refreshing. Clear and transparent, this is one of my favorite-ever Rieslings. Plus: the color would never suggest this wine is 20 years old! Thanks, @Lyle Fass.
