Domaine de Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem Syrah Blend
Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan. This sub $20 beauty is funky and rich with beef blood, moss, leather, tobacco, and stewed plums. Not a wine for everyone but punching above it’s weight. In a dumb phase now. Stay tuned. Great BTG pour.

Apr 4th, 2021From stalwart Rhône producer Chapoutier's Roussillon label, the Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem offers a polished, more tethered expression of Côtes du Roussillon Village. Wilted herbs, thyme, lavender, peppercorn, and raspberry liqueur flesh out on the palate, before finding a saltier, more gripping finds finish of decent length. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan.

Mar 30th, 2018With age, this is truly deserving of its high praise. Melted dark cherry licorice and dried herbs. It’s finally all come together. Don’t be fooled by the “cotes” designation - this is interesting

Oct 7th, 2017Black & red cherry, black plum & earth. Dried herbs, firm but soft tannins. Weighty mid-palate, long finish.
Would rate higher, but alcohol is out of balance and very prominent.
Needs time in bottle.

Wow! I throughly enjoyed this one. This one really needs to breath. Initial nosing is very earthy, humid and moss like, deep, with the dark fruit in the background. I can see how some mention tobacco. It is increasingly dry on the palate, but gentle, and a medium to long finish. Very nice complexity and balanced tannins for just $25Cad!
Wonder what this will taste like in another year or two. Time to go buy more.
