Lo Nuevo, Sorbo A Sorbo Old Vines Garnacha, 2012

Region: Calatayud in Aragón, Spain

Visual: dark red, lightly tawney north edge, slight oxidization? Thick legs with slow drips indicating a higher proof.

Smell: fruity musk, carmel, soft, strawberries or cherries.

Fruit: raspberries, cherries, strawberries, bright flavor, smooth and sweet like a berry pie or a dark berry cobbler.

Earth: old, rich, hot and dry summer, well balanced.

Wood: strong caramel, not smokey, very smooth, like milk chocolate not dark chocolate.

Rating: 8.5

Catches your eyes with that red, red rose painting on the label. Dark like a mix of coffee and blood in the glass. Smells opulent and rich. Mocha, berry pie and dill/anise pickles on the nose if that makes any sense. Flavors are big, bold and dense. Bit of smoke, plenty of ripe black cherry, rose hip teas, black salty licorice, and dark chocolate nibs. This is stuff that says, I am Spanish red, hear me roar! But it’s also fairly balanced and holds a silky elegance too.

Tasted in 2014: Rich cherry, raspberry aromas with hints of lightly toasted coffee and tanned leather.

Smells floral and apple-y. Bit of good earth-y-ness too. Flavor is lovely. Rich with graphite and slate. Plenty of cherries of the sweet and tart type too. A nice cedar/Christmas tree thing too. Very dry. Even tongue drying-ly so. But juicy as well. For this price I’m very happy with my purchase.
