A caramel-glazed donut in a field of white flowers. Herbaceous flavors with so much mineralogy and acidity that belies the luscious, honeyed nose. Long, bitter finish.

Last night’s “Evening With Krug” event, where they officially released their 2006 vintage. Beautiful evening with many different Krug offerings paired with a delicious meal.

Very similar to the 167eme in style, showing a relatively fresh and bright style. If tasting this blind, there is no way I could peg this as Krug. In fact, this reminded me of the ‘04 Salon. One of the few vintages where this has more Chardonnay than Pinot (which makes sense based on vintage, and aligns with the taste profile). Extremely youthful, with a sharp, acidic and mineral driven profile. Honeyed Stone fruits up front with a classic chalky limestone and intense core of lemon zest and apple crumble tart. This still has some growing up to do. Great things on the horizon.

At the Come Taste the Stars Dinner hosted by Tyson Stelzer. The 6 th and final Champagne and what better way to finish than with the power of a Vintage Krug. 39% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir and 24% Pinot Meunière ; aged more than 11 years on Lees. This is one of the rare vintages of Krug to have more Chardonnay than Pinot Noir. Malic acid to the fore with crunchy green Apple notes. Tastes amazingly young and fresh - aiming for a long living style. Noticeable acidity finishing very dry. Tyson says at 15 years of age that it needs another 15 to reach its full potential. The French Somm at Montrachet told me this was his favourite of the 6 stellar champagnes. Powerful but retains its elegance incredibly.

White flowers, Mandarin orange, dried lemon peel, dried lime zest, cream and pastry crust. Evolves into candy cap mushroom, wet leaves, wet stone, super high acidity. Like to see this one evolve.

It’s really difficult to achieve power and elegance at the same time but this wine achieves it beautifully. Still a baby, it should continue to improve over the next 5-10 years. 39% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir and 24% Meunier. The 1st time Chardonnay has dominated the blend. 11 years on lees; 5g/L dosage

Light gold, nicely effervescent in the glass. Notes of lemon, chalk and a little toast. Creamy in the mouth. This is just getting started.

Krug's 2004 is a total stunner. What a Champagne. Vastly superior to the consistently underwhelming 2002 and the best Krug Vintage since 1996....
