Kir-Yianni Estate
Single Vineyard Xinomavro
Mint and thyme on the nose. The front is the faintest faintest hint of strawberry fruit. The tannins don’t kick in until the mid palate so this starts as a very delicate wine. But then the tannins kick in. Initially they’re tight and overpowering—but after an hour the decanter the become a bit more gentle and civilized. On the back palate I get a citrusy grapefruit tartness. This wine has a long delicate finish. Silky. Very pleasant!

Apr 22nd, 2023Now we’re cookin. This wine has taken a long time to come around. Note to self, wait 10 years before opening the first bottle in a case of these… still pretty tannic, prominent on the tongue but not so grippy around the rest of the mouth as before. Spice and cigar box box flavours mixed with earth and tart forest berries, though fruit fairly restrained. Must try and save one of these to try in another 10 years. And one more to try 10 years after that.

Aromas of cigar box and vanilla. Tannins have significantly mellowed over the last two years. Still strong tannins but much more integrated and almost entirely on the tongue, not all over. Will wait another year or two for the next bottle. Tart cranberries and baking spices.

Dec 29th, 2019Bouquet of plastic and garden hose. Deep color, indigo. Bright acidity it very intense tongue drying, lip to teeth tannins. Sour cherries, cranberry, underripe plums, black olives. As it opened up more spices appeared. Licorice too, I think, but I was also eating licorice so that could have been in my teeth. Intense wine but definitely needs more time. Very curious to know what this will be like in a few years. It’s got potential.

Feb 9th, 2018Cherry, black currant, madagascar vanilla, wet stones, hint of something herbal - very concentrated, probably old vines, quite grippy, high acid, mineral finish - like a lighter version of a declassified babaresco - probably the grapes deserved better treatment but violet eyes to die for.
