Deep garnet with brick edges. Layered nose with earthiness, cherries, forest floor, a touch dirty and a bit of dry sweet spices. Medium tannins (6/10) and medium plus bodied. Quite surprised with the power this still has, needed an hour or two in the glass to open up. Solid acidity with some aged complexity on the palate. Layers of earthiness, dried red cherries, red currants, dried herbs, damp leaves, a little musty and tobacco leaves. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2020.

2006. One of the greatest names in Coonawarra and indeed South Australia. Takes a few years to come around and this is showing very well now but with plenty of life left too.

When I drink Cabernet Sauvignon at home, it has to be out of my massive Riedel Vinum XL Cabernet Sauvignon. I am pretty sure the glass can fit a whole bottle in, it’s pretty big!

This bottle of the Katnook Estate 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon I received as a sample from the Wingara wine group team (thank you!).

Katnook are based in South Australia’s Coonawarra region. Coonawarra is famed for its terra rossa soil and unique terroir for making wine.

This 2016 Cab retails for $40. Thirty percent of the final blend for this wine spent an average of 17 months maturing in mostly older French oak to add complexity and suppleness to the wine. This will also help it age well (the winery suggests up to 15 years).

This wine is also 1 of only 65 wines which are listed in the ‘Excellent’ category of the Langton’s VI, Classification of Australian Wine.

We enjoyed this elegant red wine with a rather casual dinner of homemade pizza. We made a pizza with cranberry sauce, chicken, pinenuts and cheese and the wine really married well with the cranberry sauce.

Here are our notes on the wine:

It’s a deep ruby red colour in the glass. On the nose it’s full of rich black fruits (think berries and currants) a bit of tar, a few squares of dark chocolate and a handful of coffee beans. While in the mouth it’s full bodied and nicely rounded with a clean, dry tannic finish. Wood-smoked berries and chocolate come to mind.

This wine was sent to me from the Wingara Wine Group as a sample. I was under no obligation to post about it.

All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!

The cooler weather is on the way and I'm craving reds! This 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from Katnook Estate in Coonawarra (South Australia) has recently been released and retails for approx $40 a bottle at places like Dan Murphy's and Vintage Cellars. The wine is matured for 13 months in 50% French (10% new) and 50% older American oak barriques to help develop it into a spectacular wine.

Not to mention it's one of the 65 wines listed in the 'Excellent' category of Australia's prestigious Langton's Classification! And here's what Mr. Spittoon and I thought of it..

Opaque inky purple red on the eye with a nose full of sweet black cherry and cassis with some spice and cedar wood coming through. On the palate it's juicy and fruit driven with a super lingering finish. Notes of black plums and cherries with hints of cocoa stood out for me. A wonderful rich red wine!

Have finally found the secret to katnook! It needs a dozen years plus! This was a superb end to a debaucherous evening, and a perfect end. Rounded, full bodied with more of the potential that Katnook always promises but never quite delivers.

An assortment of dark fruits. Black currant, blackberry, black cherries. Some red currant too and that Coonawarra choc mint. Bit of the cigar box thing going on as well. Oak is definitely noticeable but it's not distracting in any way. Still youthful with many years to go.

What an amazing wine. I can't believe this is nearly 20 years old. Exceptional young flavour. NO tannins that I hate in most Australian Cabernets So smooth.
