We recently had a 40 wine blind tasting at the Downs Club to select a new Premium Member’s Claret. This wine was in my Top 5 but in the end did not get the nod. Dark rich colour with plenty of ripe fruit and toasty oak but still manages to have notes of black pepper in this full bodied red. I liked this from an exceptional vintage in South Australia.

Dark garnet with medium+ aromas of black fruits, spice and cedar. On the palate flavors of blackberry, black cherry, cinnamon and cedar with some dried berries and mushroom notes. Full body with vivid acidity, medium tannins on lingering finish ending with dried fruit and oaky notes. Very Nice, can still age a bit. Tasting Sample.

Earthy aromas with cranberry and Basil. Some Clare Valley menthol but not as much as Wendouree from Clare. Oak influence has minimised but it would have got a fair hit when made. To summarise a medium to full bodied Clare Valley Shiraz drinking well.

Deep purple with berry fruit aromas with cedar spice notes. On the palate juicy cherry and blackberry flavors with cedar, leather and sweet savory spice. Attractive tannins, lingering finish ending with sweet oak. Drinks well. Very nice!

Dry, lean and rustic dark fruits, plum skins, blueberry, painted over taunt tannins. In the glass, pie sporting a crimson bowl. Loads of under brush and wild licorice. It's so good to a Shiraz showing some restraint, nicely done!

Pencil shavings, big and bold, more massive than the other wines we have had, yet tannins are powdery. Cocoa powder w/a touch of mocha. Black pepper. Fig. Is ripe. Level says 14%, but it's higher than that, I think. Soft, is ripe.

Tons of menthol on the initial aromas, great red fruits, and cigar box flavors. Yummy, but typical Aussie.
