Jacques Selosse
Substance Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne Chardonnay
Disgorged 2016. Nutty and dried stone fruit. Lovely mineral drive underneath. In the oxidative style but great balance. Really good

Apr 14th, 2023Seem to have left my notes at home and now at the coast but this was such an assault on the senses I can remember 90% of it - this was a very good New Year’s Eve Champagne. Selosse deserves to be in a unique category being the product of a Solera. Quite oxidative and best served in large Burgundy glasses. Aromas of mouldy apples and oranges with notes of almond and mint. The colour is like beer with a mild mousse. Like many good wines it is constantly presenting different aromas and flavours. From memory disgorged November 2016. The intensity of flavour is profound. Only 3000 bottles made annually for the world and difficult to source. I have had the pleasure previously at tastings but only the 2nd time I have shared a bottle with my wife. This is a wine that challenges you in every respect and takes you out of your comfort zone. It is well named as Substance.

Jan 1st, 2022Colour of Rich Yellow Gold. I served this wine in Red Burgundy Glasses. Oxidative Sherry like notes from the solera system. Also the first Champagne I have ever decanted. Mature developed flavours. Notes of hazelnut and mouldy orange. An amazing wine - not really Champagne as we know it. 100% Avize Chardonnay. Disgorged 4th July 2008 so plenty of bottle development. Following the advice of Roscoe Halligan of Prince Wine Store (after he had been advised by Selosse himself) regarding Decanting and appropriate stemware, and required age I can now say I “get” Selosse Substance, appreciate it and will buy in the future. He bottles at the minimum atmosphere required by law. Unique can be an overused word with Wine but I am confident in saying this is truly unique. Fitting for my better half’s birthday!

Disgorged Jan 16, 2013. I often hear people say this cuvée is "oxidative", but I don't understand that at all. This bottle is so fresh and vibrant, with a wonderful complexity and finesse.
