Il Marroneto
Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese
Dark and pleasantly herbal-tinged, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino smolders up with a woodsy blend of dusty black cherries, cedar shavings and flowery underbrush lifted by hints of mint. This soothes with textures of pure silk, verging on fleshy at times yet held together by stimulating acidity. A wave of ripe orange-tinged red fruits cascade across the palate. Its tannins are sweet and round, still quite grippy as the 2016 finishes long and staining. A licorice tinge slowly fades. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2023)

Beautiful. Baking spice nose. Cherry, cinnanom, clove. Pleasant acidity, super spherical on the palate. Long finish. Absolutely stellar. Near top of my scale.

Brunello tasting like a burgundy, plane, clean.

May 15th, 2022Color is translucent ruby. On the nose is dust, tobacco, dried rose petal and cherry at first. Then pure, sweet red berries, red plum, black tea, dried cherries, orange peel, clove and fennel on the palate. Has the quality of being simultaneously crystalline, pure and concentrated. Tannins are fine and just gently brush the palate. Nice perception of sweetness. Elegant, Burgundian Brunello. Should develop nicely but it is already drinking so well, no need to wait.

Apr 12th, 2020The first underwhelming bottle of Il Maronetto I’ve ever had, I think. And I’ve probably tasted 30ish examples. @Andrew Mecoli FYI

Aug 26th, 2019Not profound, but perfectly resolved. Probably not going to improve from here.

The medium weight palate shows savoury cherry, spice and liquorice with fine persistent tannins. Drinking at its peak but will stay at this level for another 5 plus years. A brilliant match with pappardelle pasta, lamb, fresh basil and Parmesan (thanks Georgie). This wine was a treat, from an excellent year for Brunello - wish I had a few more bottles.
