Dense and showy. Ripe blackberry, black cherry compote, sour plum. Mineral and toasted wood spices abound in finish. Impressive.

This is made in a very approachable style and I can see why it's so popular. Red and dark fruit with some vanilla. Smooth with just a little grippy tannin on the finish. $25

The 2012 Esporão Reserva, DOC Alentejo, is a great wine for under $20. A blend of Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Trincadeira, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it's an intensely red wine, medium-bodied, with aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, spice, cedar, and vanilla. The tannins and acidity play well together after the wine is open or decanted for a while. This was a sample sent to me for review.

Red cherry. Bold. Needs some time after opening. The first and the second glass are quite different!

A blend of Aragonês, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Alicante Bouschet. The color is deep ruby, and it’s closed at first. With air it offers bright red berry notes, cedar wood, and minty fennel. The palate delivers juicy cherry fruit and lots of acidity, plus jumpy tannins. This is a lively wine that needs some time in bottle (for now, in decanter) to settle down. 14.5% | $25 (sample)
